Abstract. Overlapping clandestine migration flows with illicit phenomena in the Mediterranean Basin Area creates an unprecedented challenge for the European Union. Dealing with demographic exodus is not entirely new to the old European continent, but the typology of demographic permutations requires political, economic and socio-cultural adaptation. The diversity of opinions on the management of migration, as well as the disproportionate economic capacity of EU members to handle the phenomenon, generate different views at the level of each state. Understanding the long-term impact of the migration phenomenon and the need to reduce the development gap between emigration countries and the new host countries is a key issue that makes us wonder whether migrants are likely to return to their countries of origin.
