OVER 60 YEARS OF ROMANIAN AEROSPACE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION – 2020

by https://www.geopolitic.ro/author/

The National Institute for Aerospace Research ‘Elie Carafoli’ – INCAS is the leading research establishment in aerospace sciences in Romania, with a tradition of over 60 years in aerospace engineering, flow physics and applied aerodynamics, using state-of-the-art technologies and unique infrastructure of national importance. INCAS has been involved in all major national aerospace projects for both civil and military areas, and currently acts as a major player in EU policy-making for Research and Development under FlightPath 2050 and Horizon 2020.

INCAS has carried out its activity under different names and structures since 1950, when the Applied Mechanics Institute of the Romanian Academy was established. In 1991, the Aviation Institute was reorganized along with the entire aerospace industry and a new entity was established: the National Institute for Aerospace Research ‘Elie Carafoli’ – INCAS.

As a research and development establishment, INCAS’ mission is to offer dedicated services to the aerospace community. INCAS handles everything from basic-oriented research via applied research to technological development and implementation of the obtained production results.

Objective

INCAS’ main objective is to become a regional leader and provider of competence and valued research for advanced research and development in aerospace sciences, by promoting its unique infrastructure of applied research at an international level and through continuous training of an elite body of scientists in the aerospace field.

Directions

The main research and development directions of the National Institute for Aerospace Research ‘Elie Carafoli’ are:

  • Fundamental and applied research in the field of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics;

  • Basic and advanced research in the field of aerospace systems dynamics;

  • Conceptual development and integration of aerospace systems;

  • Complex simulation in the field of fluid mechanics and complex industrial processes;

  • Development of new materials for aerospace applications;

  • Atmospheric research

Facilities:

INCAS is recognized as a unique research and development institution with highly complex experimental facilities and platforms for the research of fluid mechanics, applied aerodynamics, aerospace systems, systems dynamics and atmospheric research. The facilities and platforms are internationally competitive and represent the basis for civil and military aerospace projects and include:

  • Trisonic Wind Tunnel

  • Subsonic Wind Tunnel

  • AERO VR – Virtual Reality Laboratory

  • ATMOSLAB-CAART – Atmospheric Research Laboratory

  • Shock Tube / Ludwieg Tube

  • Systems Department

  • Flow Physics Department

  • Structures and Materials Department

  • Technology Development Department

  • Flight Base – Atmospheric Research (Strejnicu, Prahova)

  • ECOTECH – Experimental Platform (Măneciu, Prahova)
