Abstract. Dunărea este fluviul european care traversează întreaga Europă, de la vest la est, constituind axa continentală paralelă cu cele două axe maritime reprezentate de Marea Mediterană și Marea Baltică. Fluviul a fost în mod constant un element de mare importanță economică, politică și militară în centrul și sud-estul Europei.  În secolul XX, interesul marilor puteri occidentale pentru zona Rhin-ului, unde a început procesul unificării europene, a făcut ca spațiul danubian să fie controlat succesiv de Germania și URSS, nefiind posibil să reprezinte un element de integrare europeană. La începutul secolului XXI, luând în considerare noile realități politice și economice din spațiul danubian, Dunărea reprezintă un factor major al Europei Centrale și de Sud-Est în procesul de integrare europeană.

The Danube and the European Unity in the XXI Century

Abstract. The Danube is the European river which crosses the whole Europe, from west to east constituting the continental axis parallel with the two maritime axes formed by the Mediterean Sea and the Baltic Sea. The river was constantly an element of great economical, political and military importance in Central and south-eastern Europe. In the XX century, the interest of the great occidental powers for the area of the Rhine, where began the process of European unification, made the danubian space be successively controlled by Germany and USSR and not being able to represent an element of European integration. At the beginning of the XXI century, considering the new political and economical realities in the danubian space, the Danube represents a major factor of the Central and south-eastern Europe in the process of European integration.
