Summary
The most persistent and consequential challenge that will confront the United States for the next several decades will be the rise of China. Evidence of this is seen on a day-to-day basis on a range of American interests from freedom of the seas to the security of its allies and even security at home, particularly in cyberspace. U.S. policymakers will have to manage the U.S. response to China in concert with America’s other global priorities, interests and responsibilities. To deal with the China that has emerged on the global stage, the U.S. must demonstrate the determination to protect its vital interests for the long-term and sustain it through multiple generations of Chinese leadership.
