Abstract. In the present study we intend to decode the threats and vulnerabilities of the Wider Black Sea Region. Evidence reveals that the Black Sea has become a troubled geopolitical area where strategic interests manifest themselves as a “war of nerves” and simulations of international confrontations. The issue of the Black Sea, in conjunction with the Azov Sea and the extension to the Caspian Sea, presents a complicated geopolitical region, where international cooperation is deteriorating, and an upward trend emerges in the hard power competition that the Russian state is trying to impress.
