Abstract. The collaboration between the two Great Powers stems from Sino-Soviet misunderstandings that led to the withdrawal of Soviet councilors from China in 1960 and border fights in March 1969. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter recognized the People’s Republic of China.
On the one hand, over time there have been problems between the two states related to human rights violations by China, US support for Taiwan, Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade in 1999, American allegations of commercial technology theft by five Chinese hackers in 2014, the issue of South China Sea in 2015, the trade war that started in March 2018.
On the other hand, there is cooperation at the economic, cultural, political and military level between the two states: tens of thousands of young people studied in the US; in 2000, President Bill Clinton signed the China Trade Bill allowing the normalization of trade relations between the two countries; in 2005, a US – China strategic dialogue is launched; in 2008, China becomes the largest US creditor; in 2013, Barack Obama tries to build a personal relationship with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and organizes in the US the ”Sunnylands Summit”; in 2014, the US – China Joint Presidential Statement on Climate Change is signed; in March 2017, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visits Beijing; in April and November 2017, high-level bilateral meetings take place.
