Abstract. One of the priorities of the European Union was the enlargement in the West Balkans. Unfortunately, in the last period EU faces major crises in its structure and the enlargement in that part of Europe was postponed. The important points for the European structure were: the economic crises, the situation with Rusia, the migration problem and Brexit negotiations, which represents different threats for the stability of the EU.
The last big event, the wish of the United Kingdom to leave the European construction, determines more cohesion between the member states and the postponed enlargement can be realized in future. Serbia, Montenegro, the Former Republic of Macedonia are examples of countries who started the accession negotiations. Croatia is part of the European Union since 2013. The stability for this area of the continent is essential for the EU security and this can be realized by respecting the fundamental norms.
Montenegro has potential in this way, after Macedonia and Serbia, which have the majority of the negotiation chapters in an advanced stage.
This is a contemporary subject, in the present accession negotiations are unfolds for some states from the West Balkans, including Montenegro. European Commission’s official documents for this process are present in English language. There are also official documents from the Montenegrin government which indicates the negotiation progress and the institutions which are implied in the process.
