The role of ammonia in the European fuel mix is likely to be decided soon. At present, the debate on ammonia is clearly shifting from theory to procurement. A couple of years ago, the discussion was still niche, focusing on future fuels. At present, it, however, has become a concrete question of volumes, contracts, ports, and price exposure. Based on current assessments, ammonia is now expected to serve several purposes at once, from serving as a hydrogen carrier and a balancing tool for renewable power systems, to becoming a maritime fuel and a feedstock for industry and fertilizers. The sector is no longer facing the challenge of deciding whether ammonia matters; it is now looking to determine where supply is available and under what economic conditions.
