Abstract. Sixty years after the foundation of the European Union, we can observe that, at least in the raw material and energy domains, the initial idea of protecting the interests of the consumer, the individual, or any company, transformed into protecting the interests of a dozen or so companies that have become, in the last forty years, multinational energetic giants. This has been done by neglecting the regional and national interests.
The first ten European energy companies have Gazprom as their prime stakeholder. At this moment, Kremlin is dictating the European energy resource policy. The European Union’s only chance to protect itself from an eventual energy extortion is to elaborate and respect a common energy strategy, leaving behind the immediate national interests and the interests of corporations controlled through various methods by Russian companies, in favor of common interests of collective defense, in the immediate future.
