Estoril is a charming town sandwiched between Lisbon and Cascais on the coast. Sadly, tourists have already discovered Portugal and Estoril. This place is particularly popular with Europeans during the summer months, but because this place is so magical and special we had to add it as one stop not to miss on our world tour.
When to visit? Do not go during the high holiday season in July and August when the town is packed with beachgoers. The winters can be mild, but tricky. So if you want a shot at pleasant weather, maybe a little beach time, and avoiding the maddening crowds try May or September.
How to get there? Fly TAP, the Portuguese airline. Service was great. Good flight options. Costs were reasonable. Fly to Lisbon. You can get to Estoril from the airport in less than an hour.
Where to stay? There is only one place to stay—the iconic Hotel Palacio. Ian Fleming stayed at the hotel during World War II, spying for the British. His novel Casino Royale drew inspiration from the nearby casino. The cast of the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1966) stayed at the hotel and the hotel appears in scenes in the movie. When we were there recently we met the employee who handed the movie’s stars their room keys. He is still on the job! Ask to meet him.
